The Client
Our client, EGS is a multi-national organisation operating in Europe, America, Asia and Australia. EGS provide a wide range of Marine Surveying services to the Telecommunications, Renewables, Oil & Gas, Charting and Marine Infrastructure sectors.
Due to an increase in demand in EGS services based out of Australia, they are seeking an experienced Geophysicist to work out of their Western Australian branch for Onshore and Offshore responsibilities.
The Role
Based at the EGS branch in Fremantle, the successful candidate will be working on projects based in Australia and globally in both Onshore office based work and Offshore surveying. EGS estimates the following work loads;
- Onshore
- Mainly based in Fremantle with additional land based project work in Australia & Overseas
- Approximately 60% of the time
- Offshore & Inshore
- Northwestern Australia, Australia & International
- Approximately 40% of the job - 90 to 120 Days Per Year
- Additional leave is accrued whilst offshore
Ideally the Senior Geophysicist would be a specialist in 2D Multichannel Seismic for offshore surveys. This position requires expertise in the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of Marine 2D multichannel seismic data, particularly in support of the growing Offshore Wind Farm market in Australia. The successful candidate will lead the multichannel seismic component of our geophysical site surveys and will work alongside a global team of experts.
The office environment is relaxed, with flexible start/end times and partial working from home possible. The working week is 38 hours with. Our Client’s newly refurbished office is based in central Fremantle, walking distance to train station and the Freo CBD/main streets and beach.
Key Responsibilities:
- Equipment Setup & Offshore Acquisition: Lead setup, calibration, and offshore acquisition of 2D multichannel seismic data using airgun or sparker sources and multichannel 2D streamers.
- Seismic Data Processing: Process seismic reflection/refraction datasets. Proficiency with both prestack and poststack workflows is necessary.
- Seismic Interpretation: Perform detailed interpretation of seismic data and integrate with other geophysical and geotechnical datasets. The objective of this interpretation is to support engineering design (not focused on reservoir interpretation which is typical of exploration in the oil and gas industry).
- Reporting: Write comprehensive reports summarizing findings, interpretations, and recommendations.
- Offshore Work: As part of the role, you will be involved in field work, primarily focused on the preparation, mobilisation, calibration, and oversight of multi-channel seismic surveys. On average, you can expect around 90 days of offshore work per year, spaced out over the year, though this may vary depending on project demands
- Office Based: The position is full time and when not offshore or on leave the role is based in the Fremantle office where project planning, data processing and reporting are carried out. We offer flexible hours during the week and allow working from home.
EGS has extensive resources and support through their global group and freelance network, ensuring you maintain a balanced work-life dynamic. While increased remote operations have reduced the need for offshore placements, offshore time remains an integral part of this role. But it’s not just work—offshore assignments offer a great opportunity for motivated individuals with a positive attitude to gain valuable experience. Plus, these assignments are generously incentivised, making them a rewarding aspect of the job.
The Candidate
EGS is seeking a qualified Geophysicist with at least 2 to 5 years experience working in a similar role with the following required experience:
- Offshore Data Acquisition: Proven experience with equipment setup, calibration, and execution of offshore 2D multichannel seismic systems.
- Seismic Data Processing: Expertise in processing 2D multichannel seismic data, including both prestack and poststack workflows.
- Seismic Interpretation: Strong ability to interpret marine seismic data, providing logical geological insights.
- Technical Reporting: Excellent skills in writing technical reports and presenting seismic data findings clearly and concisely.
Additional Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Knowledge of Geophysical Survey Systems: Experience with the setup, calibration, and operation of other offshore survey equipment, including: Side Scan Sonar, Subbottom Profilers (single channel, zero-offset), Magnetic Gradiometers (particularly for UXO surveys).
- Experience in Geotechnical Operations: Familiarity with geotechnical surveys, including: CPT (Cone Penetration Testing), Vibrocore and Piston Core Sampling, Boreholes
- Integrated Data Interpretation: Ability to integrate geophysical and geotechnical datasets to provide comprehensive interpretations.
Why join our Client?
As part of the global EGS Group, you will contribute to surveys supporting Offshore Wind Farms, Oil and Gas, Telecommunications, Defense, and nearshore construction projects. The majority of the work is in offshore and nearshore marine environments.
This is a unique opportunity to specialize in Marine 2D MultiChannel Seismic while gaining exposure to a variety of geophysical and geotechnical techniques.
Their South Fremantle office, located next to the popular South Beach and a bustling café strip, offers a vibrant and dynamic place to work. It is home to a diverse, motivated, and upbeat team of professionals who thrive in a collaborative environment. EGS pride ourselves on fostering a positive workplace with flexible working conditions built on trust and accountability.
It’s an exciting time to join EGS, with year-on-year growth driving them forward. The industry is evolving rapidly with new technologies such as AI, Autonomy, and advanced communications (e.g., Starlink) creating endless opportunities for innovation. They also have an R&D team finalising an exciting Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) project, which will enable 24/7 remote vessel operation from their Fremantle office.
